BBVA Compass Restructures Leadership; Appoints COO Across Wealth, Retail Divisions

Following a shake-up to its leadership model, Sunbelt-based BBVA Compass has named a chief operating officer to take charge across its wealth, retail and commercial banking offerings.

Rafael Bustillo, an employee at the firm since 1987, will lead its consumer and commercial bank with the aid of chief digital banking officer Jeff Dennes. He will operate from the firm’s Houston, TX, office.

He moves from the commercial banking division, which he headed for the past five years. He has also served as commercial banking’s Denver market president and Western region executive; Gainesville market president and regional executive for Northeast Florida and Southeast Alabama community markets; and commercial and private banking manager in Huntsville, AL.

Bustillo will lead the team responsible for “capitalizing on opportunities and mitigating challenges across the bank’s footprint,” the firm said in a statement.

The team will be formed of four regional executives, as well as “champions” from across its divisions such as wealth management, retail banking, commercial banking and commercial real estate.

The firm’s restructuring will also see regional chief executives appointed to direct the bank’s footprint in its major cities of operation. These will include the Texas border as well as New Mexico, designed to help strengthen its links to the local communities.

But the key is that the new organization will allow us to better meet the needs of the people and places we serve,” said BBVA Compass’s chairman and chief executive, Manolo Sanchez.

Among other moves, in September, BBVA Compass appointed a new head of asset management and trust to its global wealth unit. Based in Houston, TX, Maria Holmes also leads BBVA Securities’ registered investment advisor program.
